BYU Defensive Coordinator

After a 31-16 loss to Utah State which dropped BYU to 1-4 early in the season, defensive coordinator Jaime Hill was fired. Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall took over the defense and has led them to three wins in four games, with the one loss coming to top five rated TCU. If Mendenhall decides to continue in the future calling the defense, expect graduate assistant Kelly Poppinga to be hired full time as the team's outside linebacker's coach. If Coach Mendenhall does decide to look for a new defensive coordinator, the coaching tree has come up with two potential replacements:

Osia Lewis is currently the defensive coordinator of the UFL's Hartford Colonials. He was the defensive coordinator at UTEP in 2008 and '09. Lewis coached linebackers at Oregon State from 1991-96, spending two years on staff with Bronco Mendenhall, who coached defensive line and coordinated the Beaver's defense in 1996. Lewis was also a graduate assistant at OSU, with his first year as GA during Mendenhall's senior season as a LB in Corvallis.

Gary DeLoach is in his third season as defensive coordinator at North Texas. With the firing of head coach Todd Dodge, there is a strong possibility that DeLoach is on his way out. He has been a DC at Stephen F. Austin, New Mexico State, and two stints at North Texas. He was also the cornerbacks coach at UCLA from 2003-07, spending two of those seasons on staff with BYU offensive line coach Mark Weber.
