Doug Martin will resign at the end of the season as head coach at Kent State. He won about one-third of his games in his seven seasons as head coach. The coaching tree has come up with four potential replacements:
Charley Molnar is the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, where he is in his first season.
- Previous three seasons spent as WR coach at Cincinnati
- Seven seasons as offensive coordinator at Kent State (1994-2000)
- Offensive coordinator at Illinois State from 1990-93
- New Kent State Athletic Director Joel Nielsen was the associate AD at Illinois State in 1991 and '92
Tony Alford is currently the WR coach at Notre Dame, where he is in his second season.
- Coached running backs at Kent State in 1996
- Has strong recruiting ties across the country
- Never been a coordinator or head coach, but is a well-respected position coach
Steed Lobotzke is currently the offensive coordinator at Wake Forest, where he is in his tenth season.
- OL coach at Ohio from 1997-2001 before going to Wake Forest
- In 2001, his first year at Wake Forest, Joel Nielsen was in his last year as the Demon Deacons' associate athletic director.
Trooper Taylor is currently the assistant head coach/WR coach at Auburn, where he is in his second season.
- Coached running backs at Tulane from 1999-2003
- Kent State president Lester Lefton was the Vice President at Tulane from 2001-05 before coming to Kent State.
- A polarizing figure for anyone who has ever seen his sideline antics. See this grainy Youtube video and form your own opinion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9nt15CpAtM&feature=related
