Dave Wannstedt was fired after six seasons as head coach at Pitt. He has a record of 42-31 going into the bowl game, which will be his last with the team. The coaching tree has come up with three potential replacements:
Sal Sunseri is the assistant head coach and LB coach at Alabama, where he is in his second season. Sunseri was previously the defensive line coach for the Carolina Panthers from 2002-08.
COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
- DL/LB coach at Pitt from 1985-92.
- Played linebacker at Pitt from 1978-81.
Teryl Austin is in his first season as defensive coordinator at Florida. He came to UF after seven seasons as a defensive backs coach in the NFL with the Cardinals and Seahawks.

- Played at Pitt from 1984-88
Curt Cignetti is in his fourth season coaching wide receivers at Alabama. He also spent seven seasons at North Carolina State, where he coached Philip Rivers for two years.
COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
- Coached quarterbacks and tight ends at Pitt from 1994-99.
- Graduate assistant at Pitt in 1983 and '84.
