Dave Doeren has been hired as the new head coach at Northern Illinois. While there is a chance that defensive line/special teams coach Charlie Partridge and/or Chris Ash will take over as coordinator, Wisconsin will still need to fill the role of linebackers coach. The coaching tree has come up with the following potential replacements:

- LB coach at San Diego State in 2006 and '07. Worked with cornerbacks coach Chris Ash in 2007.
- Recruiting coordinator at Iowa from 1998-2000. Bret Bielema coached linebackers at Iowa from 1996-2001.
- Played at Iowa from 1993-96. Bielema was a graduate assistant with the Hawkeyes in 1994 and '95.
- Played linebacker at Wisconsin from 1990-93. Played with TE coach Joe Rudolph for three seasons.
- Defensive coordinator at Nebraska from 2004-07, working with Joe Rudolph in 2007.
- Coached at Wisconsin from 1990-2003, becoming defensive coordinator in 1995.
- Coached with Chris Ash at Iowa State in 2009
- LB coach at Pitt from 2003-06, where he coached with Charlie Partridge, who coached defensive ends and special teams at Pitt.
Other names in consideration: Charlie Camp, Akron; Robb Smith, Rutgers.
