Ball State Head Coach

Head coach Stan Parrish has been fired after two years at the helm. He had a record of 6-19 in two seasons plus a bowl game loss in 2008 after previous head coach Brady Hoke left for San Diego State. The coaching tree has come up with four potential replacements:

Don Treadwell is currently the offensive coordinator at Michigan State. He filled in as acting head coach for the Spartans when Mark Dantonio suffered a heart attack earlier in the season. After keeping the team focused during the absence of their leader, Treadwell further showed why he is deserving of a head coaching job.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Offensive coordinator at Ball State in 2003
  • Ties to the MAC: also played and coached at Miami (Ohio)

Rick Minter is currently the LB coach at Indiana State, where he is in his first season. He has been a defensive coordinator at Marshall, Notre Dame, and South Carolina since his last stop as a Head coach. Minter was the head coach at Cincinnati from 1994-2003. He was also the interim head coach in 2009 for Marshall in their bowl win over Ohio.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Defensive coordinator at Ball State from 1985-91
  • Indiana Ties: 4 seasons at Notre Dame, 6 seasons at Ball State, currently at Indiana State.

Mark Helfrich is the offensive coordinator of the high powered, #1 ranked Oregon Ducks. He is in his second season at Oregon after three years as OC at Colorado. He has also been a QB coach at Arizona State and Boise State working with school record setting Quarterbacks Andrew Walter and Bart Hendricks. He has no ties to the MAC or the Midwest, but his displays of offensive firepower at Oregon may be worth pursuing.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • QB coach at Arizona State from 2001-05 while current Ball State athletic director Tom Collins was the associate AD with the Sun Devils before leaving for Muncie in 2006.

Curt Mallory is currently the defensive coordinator at Akron, where he is in his first season after five years at Illinois. Mallory is the son of Bill Mallory, who was a college head coach for 27 years, with stops at Miami (Ohio), Colorado, Northern Illinois, and Indiana. Curt has spent his entire career in the Midwest, including stints at Michigan, Indiana, Central Michigan, Ball State, Illinois, and now Akron. Mallory was a finalist for the head coaching job at Central Michigan, which eventually went to Michigan State RB coach Dan Enos.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • LB/DB coach at Ball State from 1995-2000
