Bob Casullo was fired in his second season as the tight ends and special teams coach at Syracuse. It is unknown whether Syracuse will try to fill both spots with one new coach. Defensive backs coach John Anselmo has taken over the special teams and QB coach Nathaniel Hackett will coach the tight ends for the remainder of the season. The coaching tree has come up with four potential replacements:
Andrew Dees is currently the OL coach at Temple. He has been at Temple since 2006 when he was hired by Temple head coach Al Golden to coach the Owl's tight ends. He was also the TE coach at Buffalo from 2001-05. With no special teams experience, if hired expect John Anselmo to keep running the special teams.
COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
- Played tight end/offensive line at Syracuse from 1988-91
John Reagan is in his first season as TE coach at Rice after six years coaching the offensive line at Kansas. Reagan has also coached at Air Force, Temple, Akron, Army, Penn, Oklahoma State, and Albany. With no special teams coaching experience, he wouldn't likely fill both open spots, but would be a good pickup as a TE coach.
COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
- Played OL at Syracuse from 1990-93
Jason Michael is currently the QB coach for the San Francisco 49ers. Going into the season, he was an offensive quality control assistant, but was promoted to quarterback coach after offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye was fired and QB coach Mike Johnson took over play-calling duties. Michael has been an offensive assistant with the Jets and Raiders in between two short stints at the University of Tennessee. He gained experience working with both tight ends and special teams with the Vols, which would make him a good fit for what Syracuse needs.
COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
- TE coach at Tennessee in 2008 when 'Cuse offensive line coach Greg Adkins coached the Vols' line.
- Was a graduate assistant at Tennessee from 2003-04 working mainly with tight ends and special teams when Adkins was coaching the Volunteer tight ends coach.
Charlie Coiner
Charlie Coiner was hired by Butch Davis at North Carolina mid-season as their defensive line coach after John Blake resigned amid accusations regarding improper contact with agents. With the timing of the hiring, it is unknown if Coiner was a permanent replacement or just a fill in for the rest of the season. If he is not retained, he would be a good fit at Syracuse, having coached tight ends and special teams in the NFL and in college.
COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
- Coached tight ends for the Buffalo Bills from 2008-09. Current Orange QB coach Nathaniel Hackett was an offensive quality control coach with the Bills at the same time.
