Alabama Offensive Coordinator

Alabama offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jim McElwain has been hired as the new head coach at Colorado State. The coaching tree has come up with the following potential replacements:

Mike Groh - Alabama Wide Receivers Coach
  • Was a graduate assistant at Alabama in 2009, left for one year and returned as WR coach prior to the 2011 season.
  • If promoted to offensive coordinator, there are different options that would follow: - Groh continues to coach WR and hire a new QB coach.
- Groh moves to coach QBs, then hire a new WR coach.

- Groh moves to QBs, TE/special teams coach Bobby Williams moves to WRs,
director of football operations Joe Pannunzio or quality control coach Billy
takes over the tight ends.

Charlie Baggett - ex-Tennessee Wide Receivers Coach
  • WR coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2005 and '06, where he worked under Nick Saban.
  • Played at Michigan State from 1972-75 and came back as an assistant coach from 1983-92 and again from 1995-98. As a coach, he worked with both Nick Saban and Bobby Williams for many years.
  • If hired he would likely coach WRs, therefore moving Mike Groh to QB coach.

Noel Mazzone - Arizona State Offensive Coordinator
  • Offensive coordinator at Auburn from 1999-2001. Director of football operations Joe Pannunzio coached the Auburn tight ends and special teams in '99.
  • Offensive coordinator at Ole Miss from 1994-98, where he worked with Pannunzio for four seasons.
  • QB coach at Minnesota in 1992 and '93 where he also worked with Pannunzio.
  • QB coach at TCU from 1987-91. He worked on staff with Pannunzio with the Horned Frogs in '91.
  • If hired, Mazzone could coach QBs or WRs, with Mike Groh making the switch if necessary.

Lance Taylor - New York Jets Offensive Assistant
  • Graduate assistant at Alabama in 2008.
  • Played WR for the Crimson Tide from 2000-03.
  • If hired, Taylor would coach receivers, moving Mike Groh to OC/QB coach.
