Purdue Defensive Coordinator, DL/LB Coach

Defensive coordinator Gary Emanuel will not return for the Boilermakers in 2012.  Also, linebackers coach Phil Elmassian has left to become the new defensive coordinator at the University of Massachusetts.  Here are some candidates for the open positions, some of whom could be candidates for defensive coordinator:

DEFENSIVE LINE COACH

Steve Stripling* - Cincinnati Defensive Line Coach

• DL coach at Louisville in 2001 and '02.  Danny Hope was the assistant head coach at Louisville in 2002 and Shawn Clark was a graduate assistant in 2001 and '02.

Eli Rasheed - Toledo Defensive Line Coach

• Coached defensive tackles at Florida Atlantic from 2004-08, where he worked on staff with Gary Nord.

Nick Cavallo - Cambell University Defensive Line Coach/Recruiting Coordinator

• Was a graduate assistant at Purdue in 2009 and played defensive line for the Boilermakers from 2001-06.

LINEBACKERS COACH

Kurt Van Valkenburgh* - ex-Florida Atlantic Defensive Coordinator

• Worked on the FAU staff from 1998-2011, including the last two seasons as defensive coordinator.  He worked for five years on the Owls' staff with Gary Nord.
• DB coach at Purdue in 1996.
• Defensive coordinator at Oklahoma in 1995, where Gary Nord was the Sooners offfensive coordinator and Danny Hope was the OL coach.
• DB coach at Louisville from 1992-94, where he worked on staff with both Nord and Hope.

Mike Cox - ex-Washington Linebackers Coach

• LB coach at Louisville from 1998-2002.  Danny Hope was the assistant head coach at Louisville in 2002 and Shawn Clark was a graduate assistant in 2001 and '02.

Johnny Frost - ex-Florida Atlantic Defensive Ends Coach

• Coached defensive ends at FAU from 2006-11, where he spent three years on staff with Gary Nord.
• Played LB at Louisville from 1992-95.  Nord and Danny Hope were on the Louisville staff from 1992-94.
