Utah State Quarterbacks Coach

Utah State is reshuffling their coaching staff, and part of that includes looking for a quarterbacks coach. Offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin coached the QB's in 2010, but head coach Gary Andersen wants more focus on improving quarterback play, and therefore would like a coach to work specifically with the Aggie signal callers. The coaching tree has come up with three potential replacements:

Matt Wells is the wide receivers coach at New Mexico, where he returned in 2010 after a year as QB coach at Louisville. Wells was also the WR coach at New Mexico in 2007 and '08.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • WR coach at New Mexico in 2007-08. Offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin was the Lobos' OC during that same two year span.
  • Played quarterback at Utah State from 1993-96.

Craig Ver Steeg is an offensive assistant with the Baltimore Ravens, where he is in his third season after five years at Rutgers.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utah in 2001 and '02. Worked on the Utes staff with current USU coaches Gary Andersen, Kevin Clune, and Bill Busch.
  • Assistant QB coach at Utah from 1986-89. Gary Andersen was a senior offensive lineman at Utah in 1986.

Ryan Zimmerman has spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant at Utah State, working mainly with quarterbacks.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • GA at Utah State in 2009 and '10.
  • Played QB at Southern Utah from 2000-03. 2003 was Gary Andersen's one season as head coach at Southern Utah.

Other names in consideration: Ken Zampese, Bengals; Gino Guidugli, Central Michigan; Jonas Weatherbie, ex-Louisiana-Monroe
