Louisiana-Lafayette Head Coach

Rickey Bustle was fired as head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette after nine seasons. He had a career record of 41-65 with the Ragin' Cajuns. The coaching tree has come up with three potential replacements:

Tommy Spangler is in his fourth season as defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Presbyterian College from 2001-06, where he had a record of 42 wins and 24 losses.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Coached defensive backs at Georgia Southern from 1987-95, spending the last 5 seasons as defensive coordinator as well. ULL interim athletic director Scott Farmer was an associate AD at Georgia Southern at the same time.

Mike Sewak is the offensive line coach at Georgia Tech, where he is in his third season. Sewak was the head coach at Georgia Southern from 2002-05, compiling a 35-14 record. A longtime Paul Johnson assistant, Sewak is a disciple of the spread option offense, having been on staff with Johnson at Hawaii, Georgia Southern, and now Georgia Tech.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Offensive coordinator at Georgia Southern from 1997-2001. Scott Farmer was the associate AD during Sewak's first two years (97-98).

Les Koenning is the offensive coordinator at Mississippi State, where he has helped lead the Bulldogs to an impressive 8-4 record this season. Koenning has never been a head coach, but has been a coordinator at Duke, Houston, Alabama, Texas A&M, South Alabama, and now Mississippi State.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • WR coach at Louisiana-Lafayette in 1985

Vanderbilt Head Coach

Robbie Caldwell "resigned" as head coach at Vanderbilt. The Commodores finished the season with a 2-10 record. Caldwell took over in a difficult situation, with previous head coach Bobby Johnson retiring in July, just a matter of days before the start of camp. Coach Caldwell quickly won over many fans by putting on a show at SEC media day, but ultimately his personality wasn't enough to translate to wins on the field. The coaching tree has come up with two potential replacements:

David Lee is currently the Miami Dolphins' QB coach. He is in his third season with the Dolphins after a year as the offensive coordinator at Arkansas in 2007. Lee was the head coach at UTEP from 1989-93, compiling an unimpressive record of 11-46-1.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • QB coach at Vanderbilt in 1977
  • Played quarterback at Vandy from 1971-74

Phillip Fulmer

Phillip Fulmer is currently a CBS college football analyst, which he has done since ending his long tenure as head coach at Tennessee. In 17 seasons as head coach, Fulmer had a record of 152-52, including a national championship season in 1998.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Assistant coach at Vanderbilt in 1979

North Texas Coaching Staff

Dan McCarney is the new head football coach at North Texas. He was the head coach at Iowa State from 1995-2006, compiling a record of 56-85, including two bowl victories. Over the past four seasons, McCarney has been a defensive line coach at South Florida and Florida. The coaching tree has projected possible candidates to fill the Mean Green coaching staff:

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

UPDATE: Dan McCarney has named Mike Canales as his associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and QB coach.

Mike Canales did a fine job of keeping the North Texas squad together as the interim coach. Many fans and players would be delighted if Dan McCarney were to keep him on as offensive coordinator. He may also be in line for other head coaching opportunities elsewhere. Brian White (Florida TE coach) and Steve Brickey (Samford OC) are veteran coaches with experience as successful coordinators. If one of these coaches is named OC, expect them to also coach quarterbacks.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Mike Canales: WR coach at South Florida in 2007 when McCarney was the defensive line coach.
  • Brian White: TE coach at Florida in 2009-10, where McCarney coached defensive line.
  • Steve Brickey: QB coach at Iowa State under McCarney from 2000-03, spent final two seasons as offensive coordinator as well. Was the OC at North Texas from 1998-99.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

John Skladany is currently the LB coach at Central Florida after two years as defensive coordinator at Houston and a year as DC at UCF in 2007. Kevin Cosgrove is the defensive coordinator at Minnesota, but may be looking for work after Tim Brewster was fired. DeMontie Cross is the inside linebackers coach for the Buffalo Bills, where he has been since 2006. If one of these coaches is hired, expect them to also coach linebackers.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • John Skladany: Defensive coordinator under Dan McCarney at Iowa State from 1997-2006
  • Kevin Cosgrove: LB coach at Wisconsin under McCarney, who was the DC from 1990-94
  • DeMontie Cross: Coached outside linebackers and special teams at Iowa State from 2001-05

RUNNING BACKS COACH

Shelton Gandy is currently the running backs and special teams coach at North Texas, where he is in his third season after two years as RB coach at Louisiana Tech. Atif Austin coaches running backs and special teams at Northern Iowa where he has been since 2005.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Shelton Gandy: Coached at North Texas from 2008-present. No connection to Dan McCarney
  • Atif Austin: Played for McCarney at Iowa State from 1998-2002

WIDE RECEIVERS COACH

Mike Grant is the WR coach at Western Michigan, where he has been for three seasons. He was a quarterback at Nebraska from 1988-92.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
TIGHT ENDS COACH

Bruce Chambers is currently the TE coach at Texas where he has been since 1998. Why would he go from Texas to North Texas? He may not have a choice. Mack Brown has hinted at making changes on his staff after a disappointing 5-7 season. Ben Barkema is a graduate assistant at Iowa State, where he is in his second season.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
OFFENSIVE LINE COACH

Jim Hueber is currently the assistant offensive line coach for the Minnesota Vikings, where he is in his fifth season. He may be out of a job after the season after the firing of head coach Brad Childress. Phil Meyer is the offensive line coach at Southern Illinois. He was the head coach at Wisconsin-Oshkosh from 2000-06 and was the OL coach at Minnesota in 2007 and '08.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Jim Hueber: Coached running backs at Wisconsin from 1992-94 when Dan McCarney was the Badgers' defensive coordinator.
  • Phil Meyer: TE coach at Iowa State from 1995-97, then coached the Cyclones' quarterbacks in 1998 and '99.

DEFENSIVE LINE COACH

Mike Nelson is currently the defensive line coach at North Texas, where he has been for two seasons. Nelson has experience coaching under Dan McCarney, which would make this a perfect opportunity to retain a coach from the current staff.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
DEFENSIVE BACKS COACH

Tom Hayes is in his first season coaching the safeties at Tulane. Over his career, he has been a coordinator at UCLA, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Stanford along with seven years coaching DBs in the NFL. Gary DeLoach is the defensive coordinator at North Texas. He is in his second stint
with the Mean Green, having coached a total of eight seasons in Denton.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Tom Hayes: Coached defensive backs at Iowa from 1977-78, when Dan McCarney coached the Hawkeye's offensive line. Hayes was also a senior DB at Iowa in 1971, when McCarney was a freshman on the team.
  • Gary DeLoach: Coached defensive backs at North Texas for eight total years. He was the defensive coordinator for six of those seasons.

Miami (FL) Head Coach

Randy Shannon was fired after the Hurricanes' final regular season game. While "The U" hasn't produced as many wins as expected over the last few years, this is still one of those jobs that will always be attractive to big name coaches. The coaching tree has come up with four potential replacements:

Brent Venables is the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma, where he is in his twelfth season. While he has no experience as a head coach, he has been known for his success as a coordinator for years and is due for a shot soon. The question is if Miami is a good place for someone to be getting their first shot as the head man.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt was the associate AD at Oklahoma during Venables' first six years at OU.
  • Was a graduate assistant at Kansas State from 1993-94, when Hocutt was in his last two years as a linebacker for the Wildcats.
  • Venables and Hocutt were teammates at Kansas State in 1991, both playing linebacker. Venables was a senior, while Hocutt was a freshman.

Mark Richt is the head coach at Georgia. He is in his tenth season in Athens, where he has a career record of 96-33. He was seemingly on the hot seat for most of the season after a 1-4 start, but the team rallied to finish 6-6, and his job looks to be safe - for now. This may be a perfect time for Richt to leave on his own terms and start fresh at his alma mater.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Played quarterback at Miami from 1978-82

Mike Stoops is the head coach at Arizona, where he is in his seventh season. His career record with the Wildcats is 40-43 going into the last regular season game against Arizona State. While he has certainly improved the program at Arizona, he has still only managed one bowl win and has never won more than eight game in a season.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Coached at Oklahoma from 1999-2003, while Miami AD Kirby Hocutt was the associate AD at OU.
  • Coached at Kansas State from 1992-98. Was the defensive ends coach for Hocutt's last three seasons as a LB with the team.

Mark Stoops is in his first season as defensive coordinator at Florida State after six years as his brother's DC at Arizona. While he doesn't have any head coaching experience, neither did his brother Bob, who went to Oklahoma in 1999 and won a national championship in his second season.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Coached defensive backs at Miami from 2001-03
  • Miami AD Kirby Hocutt played for and worked with both of Stoops' brothers Mike and Bob at Kansas State and Oklahoma.

Other names in consideration: Mike Leach, Kevin Sumlin, Greg Schiano

Syracuse Tight Ends Coach

Bob Casullo was fired in his second season as the tight ends and special teams coach at Syracuse. It is unknown whether Syracuse will try to fill both spots with one new coach. Defensive backs coach John Anselmo has taken over the special teams and QB coach Nathaniel Hackett will coach the tight ends for the remainder of the season. The coaching tree has come up with four potential replacements:

Andrew Dees is currently the OL coach at Temple. He has been at Temple since 2006 when he was hired by Temple head coach Al Golden to coach the Owl's tight ends. He was also the TE coach at Buffalo from 2001-05. With no special teams experience, if hired expect John Anselmo to keep running the special teams.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Played tight end/offensive line at Syracuse from 1988-91

John Reagan is in his first season as TE coach at Rice after six years coaching the offensive line at Kansas. Reagan has also coached at Air Force, Temple, Akron, Army, Penn, Oklahoma State, and Albany. With no special teams coaching experience, he wouldn't likely fill both open spots, but would be a good pickup as a TE coach.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Played OL at Syracuse from 1990-93

Jason Michael is currently the QB coach for the San Francisco 49ers. Going into the season, he was an offensive quality control assistant, but was promoted to quarterback coach after offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye was fired and QB coach Mike Johnson took over play-calling duties. Michael has been an offensive assistant with the Jets and Raiders in between two short stints at the University of Tennessee. He gained experience working with both tight ends and special teams with the Vols, which would make him a good fit for what Syracuse needs.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • TE coach at Tennessee in 2008 when 'Cuse offensive line coach Greg Adkins coached the Vols' line.
  • Was a graduate assistant at Tennessee from 2003-04 working mainly with tight ends and special teams when Adkins was coaching the Volunteer tight ends coach.

Charlie Coiner

Charlie Coiner was hired by Butch Davis at North Carolina mid-season as their defensive line coach after John Blake resigned amid accusations regarding improper contact with agents. With the timing of the hiring, it is unknown if Coiner was a permanent replacement or just a fill in for the rest of the season. If he is not retained, he would be a good fit at Syracuse, having coached tight ends and special teams in the NFL and in college.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Coached tight ends for the Buffalo Bills from 2008-09. Current Orange QB coach Nathaniel Hackett was an offensive quality control coach with the Bills at the same time.

Ball State Head Coach

Head coach Stan Parrish has been fired after two years at the helm. He had a record of 6-19 in two seasons plus a bowl game loss in 2008 after previous head coach Brady Hoke left for San Diego State. The coaching tree has come up with four potential replacements:

Don Treadwell is currently the offensive coordinator at Michigan State. He filled in as acting head coach for the Spartans when Mark Dantonio suffered a heart attack earlier in the season. After keeping the team focused during the absence of their leader, Treadwell further showed why he is deserving of a head coaching job.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Offensive coordinator at Ball State in 2003
  • Ties to the MAC: also played and coached at Miami (Ohio)

Rick Minter is currently the LB coach at Indiana State, where he is in his first season. He has been a defensive coordinator at Marshall, Notre Dame, and South Carolina since his last stop as a Head coach. Minter was the head coach at Cincinnati from 1994-2003. He was also the interim head coach in 2009 for Marshall in their bowl win over Ohio.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Defensive coordinator at Ball State from 1985-91
  • Indiana Ties: 4 seasons at Notre Dame, 6 seasons at Ball State, currently at Indiana State.

Mark Helfrich is the offensive coordinator of the high powered, #1 ranked Oregon Ducks. He is in his second season at Oregon after three years as OC at Colorado. He has also been a QB coach at Arizona State and Boise State working with school record setting Quarterbacks Andrew Walter and Bart Hendricks. He has no ties to the MAC or the Midwest, but his displays of offensive firepower at Oregon may be worth pursuing.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • QB coach at Arizona State from 2001-05 while current Ball State athletic director Tom Collins was the associate AD with the Sun Devils before leaving for Muncie in 2006.

Curt Mallory is currently the defensive coordinator at Akron, where he is in his first season after five years at Illinois. Mallory is the son of Bill Mallory, who was a college head coach for 27 years, with stops at Miami (Ohio), Colorado, Northern Illinois, and Indiana. Curt has spent his entire career in the Midwest, including stints at Michigan, Indiana, Central Michigan, Ball State, Illinois, and now Akron. Mallory was a finalist for the head coaching job at Central Michigan, which eventually went to Michigan State RB coach Dan Enos.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • LB/DB coach at Ball State from 1995-2000

Minnesota Vikings Head Coach

The Minnesota Vikings fired head coach Brad Childress, with defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier taking over as interim head coach. Childress had a record of 39-35 in his fifth season with the Vikings. The coaching tree has come up with three potential replacements:

Any time a coach takes over on an interim basis, he is usually looked at as a lame duck coach. Leslie Frazier has been a candidate for multiple head coaching vacancies over the past few years, so if he is to right the ship in the last eight games, he may make a case to keep the job.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Vikings defensive coordinator since 2007.
  • Nine years of head coaching experience at Trinity College (1988-95)

Brian Billick

Brian Billick hasn't coached since his last year as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens in 2007. He led the Ravens to a Super Bowl title in 2000, and compiled a record of 80-64. Billick was hired from the Vikings, where he was the offensive coordinator one of the most high power offenses in NFL history.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Vikings offensive coordinator from 1992-98
  • Ravens head coach from 1999-2007

Jason Garrett is currently the interim head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He was a hot commodity in 2008, but turned down the Ravens and Falcons to stay in Dallas for a chance to eventually replace Wade Phillips. That time has come, and he is basically getting his on-the-job interview. If he leads the Cowboys to a solid finish, he may be retained. If he finishes strong and is still let go, the Vikings might want to take a look.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Played QB for the Miami Dolphins in 2004, which was current VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman's first and only year as general manager with the Dolphins.

Dallas Cowboys Head Coach

When it comes to the Cowboys, nobody knows what's going to happen. There is no way to make any connections to the front office because the entire executive staff has the last name Jones. Since Jerry Jones has spent all of his time in Dallas and doesn't have a GM, the only connection possible is former Cowboys assistants or former players. Who knows what will happen, so as we go into the mind of Jerry Jones, the coaching tree has come up with three potential replacements:

Jason Garrett is the Cowboys' interim head coach after Wade Phillips was fired. If Garrett can finish the last half of the season strong and keep the team together down the stretch, he will be strongly considered to remain as the head coach permanently.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Cowboys' offensive coordinator since 2007
  • Spent seven seasons as backup QB in Dallas (1993-1999)

Les Miles is the head coach at LSU. He is in his sixth season in Baton Rouge, compiling a record of 61-16* including one national championship. "The Mad Hatter" has the big personality that would fit in nicely in Big D, but while his job security looks stable for the near future at LSU, the same can never be said for the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
*record at LSU as of 11/22/10

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • TE coach for the Cowboys from 1999-2001

Deion Sanders

Will Deion Sanders be the next Cowboys head coach? No. But it's fun to think about isn't it? Bringing "Primetime" back as a coach would be something that Jerry Jones would love because it would bring in more and more attention. The only problem is that Deion has never been a coach. He lobbied for the Atlanta Falcons job back in 2003, but has done nothing to make a resume as a coach. Who knows, maybe he would be a good coach, but first he would have to swallow his pride and take a position coaching job in the college ranks before he can think about becoming an NFL head coach.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Played cornerback for the Cowboys from 1995-99
  • Mentored current Cowboy WR Dez Bryant, causing Bryant to be suspended for most of his final college season.

Kent State Head Coach

Doug Martin will resign at the end of the season as head coach at Kent State. He won about one-third of his games in his seven seasons as head coach. The coaching tree has come up with four potential replacements:

Charley Molnar is the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, where he is in his first season.
  • Previous three seasons spent as WR coach at Cincinnati
  • Seven seasons as offensive coordinator at Kent State (1994-2000)
  • Offensive coordinator at Illinois State from 1990-93
  • New Kent State Athletic Director Joel Nielsen was the associate AD at Illinois State in 1991 and '92

Tony Alford is currently the WR coach at Notre Dame, where he is in his second season.
  • Coached running backs at Kent State in 1996
  • Has strong recruiting ties across the country
  • Never been a coordinator or head coach, but is a well-respected position coach

Steed Lobotzke is currently the offensive coordinator at Wake Forest, where he is in his tenth season.
  • OL coach at Ohio from 1997-2001 before going to Wake Forest
  • In 2001, his first year at Wake Forest, Joel Nielsen was in his last year as the Demon Deacons' associate athletic director.

Trooper Taylor is currently the assistant head coach/WR coach at Auburn, where he is in his second season.
  • Coached running backs at Tulane from 1999-2003
  • Kent State president Lester Lefton was the Vice President at Tulane from 2001-05 before coming to Kent State.
  • A polarizing figure for anyone who has ever seen his sideline antics. See this grainy Youtube video and form your own opinion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9nt15CpAtM&feature=related
