North Texas Coaching Staff

Dan McCarney is the new head football coach at North Texas. He was the head coach at Iowa State from 1995-2006, compiling a record of 56-85, including two bowl victories. Over the past four seasons, McCarney has been a defensive line coach at South Florida and Florida. The coaching tree has projected possible candidates to fill the Mean Green coaching staff:

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

UPDATE: Dan McCarney has named Mike Canales as his associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and QB coach.

Mike Canales did a fine job of keeping the North Texas squad together as the interim coach. Many fans and players would be delighted if Dan McCarney were to keep him on as offensive coordinator. He may also be in line for other head coaching opportunities elsewhere. Brian White (Florida TE coach) and Steve Brickey (Samford OC) are veteran coaches with experience as successful coordinators. If one of these coaches is named OC, expect them to also coach quarterbacks.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Mike Canales: WR coach at South Florida in 2007 when McCarney was the defensive line coach.
  • Brian White: TE coach at Florida in 2009-10, where McCarney coached defensive line.
  • Steve Brickey: QB coach at Iowa State under McCarney from 2000-03, spent final two seasons as offensive coordinator as well. Was the OC at North Texas from 1998-99.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

John Skladany is currently the LB coach at Central Florida after two years as defensive coordinator at Houston and a year as DC at UCF in 2007. Kevin Cosgrove is the defensive coordinator at Minnesota, but may be looking for work after Tim Brewster was fired. DeMontie Cross is the inside linebackers coach for the Buffalo Bills, where he has been since 2006. If one of these coaches is hired, expect them to also coach linebackers.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • John Skladany: Defensive coordinator under Dan McCarney at Iowa State from 1997-2006
  • Kevin Cosgrove: LB coach at Wisconsin under McCarney, who was the DC from 1990-94
  • DeMontie Cross: Coached outside linebackers and special teams at Iowa State from 2001-05

RUNNING BACKS COACH

Shelton Gandy is currently the running backs and special teams coach at North Texas, where he is in his third season after two years as RB coach at Louisiana Tech. Atif Austin coaches running backs and special teams at Northern Iowa where he has been since 2005.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Shelton Gandy: Coached at North Texas from 2008-present. No connection to Dan McCarney
  • Atif Austin: Played for McCarney at Iowa State from 1998-2002

WIDE RECEIVERS COACH

Mike Grant is the WR coach at Western Michigan, where he has been for three seasons. He was a quarterback at Nebraska from 1988-92.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
TIGHT ENDS COACH

Bruce Chambers is currently the TE coach at Texas where he has been since 1998. Why would he go from Texas to North Texas? He may not have a choice. Mack Brown has hinted at making changes on his staff after a disappointing 5-7 season. Ben Barkema is a graduate assistant at Iowa State, where he is in his second season.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
OFFENSIVE LINE COACH

Jim Hueber is currently the assistant offensive line coach for the Minnesota Vikings, where he is in his fifth season. He may be out of a job after the season after the firing of head coach Brad Childress. Phil Meyer is the offensive line coach at Southern Illinois. He was the head coach at Wisconsin-Oshkosh from 2000-06 and was the OL coach at Minnesota in 2007 and '08.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Jim Hueber: Coached running backs at Wisconsin from 1992-94 when Dan McCarney was the Badgers' defensive coordinator.
  • Phil Meyer: TE coach at Iowa State from 1995-97, then coached the Cyclones' quarterbacks in 1998 and '99.

DEFENSIVE LINE COACH

Mike Nelson is currently the defensive line coach at North Texas, where he has been for two seasons. Nelson has experience coaching under Dan McCarney, which would make this a perfect opportunity to retain a coach from the current staff.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
DEFENSIVE BACKS COACH

Tom Hayes is in his first season coaching the safeties at Tulane. Over his career, he has been a coordinator at UCLA, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Stanford along with seven years coaching DBs in the NFL. Gary DeLoach is the defensive coordinator at North Texas. He is in his second stint
with the Mean Green, having coached a total of eight seasons in Denton.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Tom Hayes: Coached defensive backs at Iowa from 1977-78, when Dan McCarney coached the Hawkeye's offensive line. Hayes was also a senior DB at Iowa in 1971, when McCarney was a freshman on the team.
  • Gary DeLoach: Coached defensive backs at North Texas for eight total years. He was the defensive coordinator for six of those seasons.
