Oklahoma Offensive Coordinator

Kevin Wilson was hired as the new head coach at Indiana, where he goes after nine seasons at Oklahoma. Every offensive coordinator under Bob Stoops has gone on to a head coaching job (Mark Mangino, Chuck Long, Mike Leach, Kevin Sumlin, Kevin Wilson). The coaching tree has come up with four potential replacements:

Jay Norvell is the WR coach at Oklahoma, where he has been since 2008. He has experience as an offensive coordinator at UCLA and Nebraska. He has also been a position coach in the NFL with the Colts and Raiders.

  • WR coach at OU, 2008-present
  • Played at Iowa from 1982-85 and was a graduate assistant at Iowa in 1986 and '87. Bob Stoops was a senior at Iowa in '82 and was a GA and assistant coach for the Hawkeyes through 1987.

Chuck Long is in his first year as offensive coordinator at Kansas. He was the head coach at San Diego State from 2006-08, where he had a record of 9-27.

  • Coached quarterbacks at Oklahoma from 1999-2005, spending the last four seasons as offensive coordinator as well.
  • Played at Iowa from 1981-85. Bob Stoops played at Iowa from 1978-82 and was an assistant from 1983-87.

Mark Mangino last coached in 2009 as head coach at Kansas, where he had a record of 50-48 in eight seasons. He has six years of experience as an offensive coordinator at Oklahoma and Geneva College.

  • Offensive coordinator at OU from 1999-2001.
  • Run game coordinator at Kansas State from 1991-98. Bob Stoops was an assistant at Kansas State from 1989-95. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables was also an assistant at K-State.

Steve Spurrier Jr. is the WR coach at South Carolina, where he is in his sixth season. While he has no experience as a coordinator, he has spent 17 years as a WR coach and certainly has the genetics of a good playcaller.

  • WR coach at Oklahoma from 1999-2001.
  • Coached receivers at Florida from 1994-98. Bob Stoops was the Gators' defensive coordinator from 1996-98.
