Texas Defensive Line Coach

Defensive tackles and special teams coach Mike Tolleson has retired after 13 seasons at Texas. It is unknown whether UT will look for a DT coach, a defensive line coach, and who will coach special teams. The coaching tree has come up with four potential replacements:

Dan Brooks is the defensive line coach at Clemson, where he is in his second season. Prior to joining Clemson, Brooks was the DL coach at Tennessee for 15 years.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Defensive line coach at North Carolina from 1988-93 under head coach Mack Brown.

Karl Dunbar is the defensive line coach for the Minnesota Vikings, where he has been since 2006. He has also been a DL coach at LSU, Oklahoma State, and with the Chicago Bears. With the firing of Vikings head coach Brad Childress, Dunbar may be looking for a new home in 2011.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Strength & conditioning coach at LSU in 2000 and '01. Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp came to LSU in 2001 as the Tigers' linebackers coach.

Mike Pelton is the defensive ends coach at Vanderbilt, where he coached one year and will now likely be looking for another new position after head coach Robbie Caldwell stepped down. Pelton spent two seasons as DL coach at Iowa State and was the defensive coordinator at Troy in 2005 and '06.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Defensive line coach at Valdosta State in 2000, when Will Muschamp was the team's defensive coordinator.

Tim Cross is the defensive line coach at Minnesota, where he has spent the last four seasons. He will likely be out of a job after Tim Brewster was fired. Cross has also coached at Syracuse and Texas.

COACHING TREE CONNECTIONS:
  • Defensive line coach at Syracuse from 2005-06. RB coach Major Applewhite was the quarterbacks coach at Syracuse in 2005.
  • Assistant strength & conditioning coach at Texas from 2001-04.

Other names in consideration: Travis Jones, Saints; John Palermo, Middle Tennessee; Ron Burton, Air Force
