Ron West has left the New Mexico staff to take a job as co-defensive coordinator at Arizona State. Here are some possibilities to replace West:
Nick Holt - ex-Washington Defensive Coordinator
- Worked on the Washington staff with Jeff Mills the last two years. Holt was the DC while Mills coached the safeties.
- Head coach at Idaho in 2004 and '05, where Mills was on his staff as safeties coach.
- Defensive coordinator at Idaho from 1994-97. Mills was his DB coach during that time.
Buddy Wyatt - Kansas Defensive Line Coach
- DL coach at Texas A&M from 2000-02 and again in 2008 and '09. Archie McDaniel was a graduate assistant with the Aggies in '08 and played LB for the team from 2001-05.
- DL coach at Minnesota from 1992-95. Bob DeBesse was the team's offensive coordinator from 1992-96.
- Began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at TCU in 1991 after playing for the Horned Frogs from 1986-89. DeBesse was the QB coach at TCU from 1983-91.
Mike Gillhamer - ex-Illinois Defensive Backs Coach
- Spent the 2011 season on the Illinois staff with new Lobo RB coach DeAndre Smith.
Grady Stretz - ex-Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defensive Line Coach
- Was on the New Mexico coaching staff from 1997-2004
Gary Emanuel - ex-Purdue Defensive Coordinator
- DL coach at Purdue from 1997-2004. He spent two seasons on staff with Bob DeBeese, who coached the Boilermakers receivers from 2003-05. Also, Taylor Stubblefield was a player at Purdue during Emanuel's time with the team.
Jay Hood - Western Carolina Defensive Coordinator
- Defensive coordinator at Miami (Ohio) from 2005-08. DeAndre Smith was Miami's RB coach from 2005-07.
